What Makes Our Road Freight Different
Partnership With LMC Express
LMC Express is a trusted freight specialist with established routes across South Africa. Combined with our cold chain expertise, we deliver reliable temperature-controlled road freight solutions.
Depot-to-Depot Efficiency
By utilizing depot-to-depot services, we eliminate multiple handling points and reduce transit times while keeping costs competitive.
Flexible Load Sizes
Whether you’re shipping a single parcel, half pallet, or full pallet, we have the right solution for your volume requirements.
Cost-Effective for Volume
Road freight offers the most economical option for moving larger quantities over intercity distances when same-day delivery isn’t required.
Scheduled Reliability
Regular route schedules mean you can plan your inventory management and distribution with confidence.
Temperature Control During Transit
Road freight offers a significant temperature advantage over air freight: LMC Express operates dedicated refrigerated vehicles maintaining -15°C to -25°C for the entire line-haul journey — no cargo hold temperature gaps to manage.
However, transparency matters. Here’s who controls temperature at each stage:
| Stage | Temperature | Who Controls It | Our Monitoring |
|---|---|---|---|
| Collection in our truck (if applicable) | -12°C | Us (SANAS-verified Cold Watch) | ✓ Continuous |
| Drop-off / depot transfer | Brief ambient exposure during handling | Depot staff | ✗ |
| Line-haul transport | -15°C to -25°C | LMC Express | LMC’s systems |
| Destination depot | Cold storage | LMC Express | LMC’s systems |
| Final delivery in our truck (if applicable) | -12°C | Us (SANAS-verified Cold Watch) | ✓ Continuous |
Temperature monitoring during the LMC Express line-haul leg is managed by LMC’s own systems and procedures. We can request temperature data from LMC on your behalf, but monitoring during that portion is not under our direct control.
For R638 compliance documentation on legs we operate, we provide SANAS-verified Cold Watch temperature records upon request.
⚠️ Your Product Must Be Frozen Solid Before Dispatch
Road freight transit times of 2–4 days mean your product spends longer in the supply chain than local courier delivery or air freight. While LMC’s trucks maintain excellent frozen temperatures (-15°C to -25°C), the same fundamental rule applies: we maintain temperature, we don’t freeze goods down.
Your goods must have completed Phase 5 (Solid Cooling/Tempering) — uniform -18°C from surface to centre — before dispatch. Products that are only frozen on the outside will deteriorate during transit, even in a perfectly functioning -18°C truck, because:
- Packaging creates insulation that prevents the truck’s cold air from reaching the product centre
- Stacked pallets have even less air circulation than individual boxes
- A product at -8°C in the centre surrounded by -18°C packaging will slowly equalise — but not fast enough over a multi-day journey to prevent quality loss
Minimum freeze-down times before road freight dispatch:
- Small items (500g): 24–36 hours in freezer
- Medium items (2–3kg): 48–60 hours in freezer
- Large items (5kg+): 72–96 hours in freezer
- Palletised goods: Add 48–72 hours after packing onto pallet

We reserve the right to refuse goods that are not frozen solid at collection. This protects your product and other customers’ goods on the same load.
📦 Packaging for Road Freight
Road freight involves stacking, depot handling, and multi-day transit. Your packaging must withstand all three.
- Use quality cardboard boxes. We strongly recommend virgin double-walled cardboard for all road freight shipments. These provide superior structural integrity for stacking and better thermal insulation over multi-day transit compared to recycled or single-walled alternatives.
- For palletised shipments, proper palletisation is critical. Boxes must be stacked correctly to prevent crushing, ensure air circulation, and survive handling at depots. Shrinkwrap must be applied properly — it’s not just for holding boxes together, it’s part of your thermal barrier. Read our complete guide: Palletizing Frozen Goods for Long-Haul Transport: A Complete Guide.
- If using polystyrene boxes, they must include ice packs or gel packs and be packed completely full. For road freight’s longer transit times (2–4 days), include extra ice packs compared to what you’d use for same-day courier delivery.
- Pack in a cold environment and seal boxes immediately. Don’t leave packed boxes sitting at room temperature before collection or depot drop-off.
As set out in our Terms and Conditions (Section 3), packaging is your responsibility. We cannot be held liable for temperature deterioration or physical damage that results from inadequate packaging choices.

Typical Transit Times
Transit times vary based on route and service frequency:
- Daily routes: 2–3 business days typically
- Twice-weekly routes: 2–4 business days depending on schedule
- Distance and route frequency determine specific timeframes
Planning Tip: For routes serviced twice weekly, advance planning ensures your shipment catches the next scheduled service.

Third-Party Carrier Terms
Important: LMC Express is a third-party carrier. Once your goods are handed to LMC Express — whether at depot drop-off or after our collection vehicle transfers them — they are in LMC’s sole care and control until arrival at the destination depot.
As set out in our Terms and Conditions (Section 19):
- Third-party carriers operate under their own terms, conditions, and insurance
- We are not liable for loss, damage, delay, or temperature problems during the third-party portions of the journey
- Any claims for issues during LMC Express transit must be directed to LMC Express under their claims procedures
- We will help you identify the responsible party and provide their contact details
By booking road freight services that require third-party carriers, you accept that such shipments are governed by the third-party carrier’s terms during their portion of the journey. We recommend understanding LMC’s terms, liability limits, and product exclusions before shipping — particularly for high-value or temperature-sensitive products like ice cream and frozen desserts.
